Re: Post-Harris/Trump ABC News Debate Talking Points
Date: September 9, 2024
Background
Tomorrow night’s Presidential Debate (9:00 p.m. EST) offers the best opportunity for Americans to get to know Vice President Harris. The newest NYT/Siena Poll reveals that 28% of likely voters say they “need to know more” about her. Consequently, the debate also represents the single greatest danger to the Democratic Party and our official Media Partners’ efforts to elect her over Donald Trump.
Although choosing her to replace President Biden on the ticket was a grave mistake, there's no turning back. It is critically important for spokespersons and media interviewers alike to laud her outstanding performance during the debate regardless of the outcome. In the event she fails to adhere to the policy positions we’ve prescribed for her during five full days of debate prep, or spouts off nonsensical platitudes to distract from her inability to remember them, you will need to obfuscate and spin her appearance as “the greatest Presidential debate performance in American political history.”
Key Issues: Talking Points (and instructions) for Democratic Office Holders
“What she wanted to say, but Donald Trump wouldn’t let her . . . .” (Catch-all statement to be used to portray Donald Trump’s performance as a bullying misogynist.)
“What she meant to say” . . . (Catch all phrase for any/all ridiculous or incomprehensible explanations she may give during the debate to define what she believes. Given her views are a moving target, insert your fuzzy explanation of her beliefs, as long as they are difficult to pin down and perceived as squarely “in the center.”)
“Kamala is a fighter for . . . .” (If asked what she’s fighting for, be as vague as possible. Include terms such as “the future,” “a New Way Forward,” “Not going back,” “An opportunity economy,” “endless possibilities,” and “the ideas we cherish.”)
“Kamala’s the “change candidate” . . . (How we have gotten away with this talking point for nearly two months is beyond us given her role as VP over the past four years. But most Americans are gullible, and we continue to get mileage from it. So use it at will).
Specific Issues:
10 Million illegal immigrants on her watch: (Avert eyes from the camera and try your best not to laugh when stating the following):
“Men build too many walls and not enough bridges. Kamala’s a bridge builder between people, between races, between cultures,” trying to find common ground.”
The Failing Economy: (Deflect, deflect, deflect. Grit teeth, if necessary):
“You heard her tonight! She’s replacing ‘Bidenomics’ with ‘Kamalanomics’ on Day One!”
[Note: if pressed, to define Kamalanomics, use ill-defined terms such as “equity,” “opportunity,” and “your truth” to mask the fact that we are going to redistribute wealth as we see fit].
Reproductive Rights: (Although this is a lie and Trump has repeatedly denied it, use it anyway and use it often. This is our only winning issue.)
“Donald Trump wants to enact a nationwide ban on abortions
and he wants to do it without Congress.”
Democracy’s in Danger: (Although we pledged to cool the rhetoric post-assassination attempt on Trump’s life, the race is essentially tied at this point. Use any/all of these, at will, and repeat them over and over regardless of the consequences to the nation and regardless of the question asked.):
“Donald Trump is a danger to Democracy.”
“Donald Trump is an existential threat to Democracy.”
“Donald Trump will end Democracy as we know it.”
Her “Flip Flops”: (for use concerning her about-face on issues including fracking, a border wall, defunding the police, deporting criminal aliens, nationalized health care, et. Al):
“Her values are more important to her than any policy, so let’s stop worrying about her policies and leave that to the experts who will tell her what they are once she’s elected.”
Talking Points (and instructions) for our Official Media Partners
“Kamala won the debate hands down. Trump never laid a glove on her although he tried many times. Had we not been covering the debate live with our cameras, he probably would have lost his cool and tried to harm her physically like the felon he is.”
“I’d like to be objective as that’s my job. But never before has such a talented and competent woman taken a presidential debate stage and mopped the floor with her opponent so easily. It was fun to watch.”
“It’s the beginning of the end for Donald Trump. She got under his skin. Even though he never once interrupted her because of the 'dead mic' rule, we could tell he wanted to. So could she. In her responses, she bravely included ‘I’m talking here,’ ‘I’m speaking now,’ and ‘Excuse me, I’d like to finish speaking.’ Very clever on her part.”
"Donald Trump said he’s not a racist, but Harris said during the debate she’s certain he is. That’s good enough for us. (Recall she bravely outed President Biden as a racist before he chose her as his running mate in 2020. As long as she resorts to dividing America, please play her accusation at the top of the hour whenever possible to help her with the undecided black vote."
