Deathbed Confessions
Why Democrats’ Last-Minute Pivots on Controversial Issues Are Anything But Sincere
It’s the oldest trick in the book: waiting until the final moments to make a grand gesture of atonement, hoping it will wash away years of dogma and disinterest. For Democrats like Governor Gavin Newsom, the script has become familiar and predictable. The issue of allowing transgender women—biological males—to compete in women’s sports is merely the latest theater for these last-minute conversions.
It would be generous to call it a change of heart. What we’re witnessing resembles a desperate Hail Mary pass thrown into the end zone of public opinion. It’s akin to the old-school Catholic trope of a man who spends his entire life indulging in vice, only to recite a deathbed confession to Father Murphy, expecting a first-class ticket to the Pearly Gates. Sincerity? Irrelevant. It’s all about timing.
Except that the Democrats’ eleventh-hour conversions on culture war issues are not genuine confessions of faith. They’re confessions of fear—fear stemming from their public wrongdoing and fear of polling numbers that suggest their prior orthodoxy has lost its grip.
For years, progressive politicians have championed allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports under the guise of inclusivity. Never mind the evident inequities or the resounding pleas from female athletes and their advocates begging for fairness. To challenge this orthodoxy was to be branded a bigot, a reactionary, an enemy of progress.
But now, with voter sentiment shifting and everyday parents becoming increasingly vocal about the erosion of hard-won women’s sports protections, the Gavin Newsoms of the world are suddenly open to nuance. This is not a repudiation of previous stances, mind you- just a repositioning, a nod to common sense presented as responsible governance. It’s a phenomenon as old as politics itself: stick with the narrative until it becomes politically radioactive, then pivot. However, the pivot itself is an admission that the narrative was never based on principle in the first place.
But this pattern extends far beyond the gender debate. Consider Ron Klain, Joe Biden’s former chief of staff, who recently acknowledged what everyone with eyes and ears could see: Biden’s mental faculties were declining throughout his presidency. While in office, the administration maintained a PR charade of vitality, insisting the President was mentally sharp and fully capable. The press briefings were exercises in gaslighting. Only after Klain’s departure has the truth been admitted, as if his confession would retroactively grant his integrity a clean bill of health.
The problem isn’t just the lies; it’s the timing of the admission. Klain’s confessions were delivered safely from the comfort of post-administration hindsight, as if coming clean now absolves years of obfuscation. Like the confessor who believes an insincere prayer at the final moment erases a lifetime of deceit.
The same pattern emerges with the Democratic establishment’s approach to illegal immigration. For years, Democrats insisted there wasn’t a crisis. Then they claimed that immigration reform could only be addressed through sweeping, bipartisan legislation—a Herculean task requiring both sides of the aisle to miraculously unite. Yet, Donald Trump demonstrated in 30 days that strong executive action—such as border walls, policy enforcement, and remain-in-Mexico orders—could halt the influx of illegal crossings.
Democratic opportunism would be laughable if it weren’t so damaging. Female athletes who have dedicated years of training to their craft deserve better than a mealy-mouthed policy shift driven by political self-preservation. Citizens deserve better than press conferences that masquerade as transparency. And Americans deserve better than immigration policies driven by optics rather than results.
It's clear that the Newsoms and Klains of the world now seek to retrofit their records, hoping that voters won’t notice the sleight of hand. They’ve confused late-stage pragmatism with principled leadership.
But here’s the catch: a true conversion requires sincerity, which is entirely absent from these performative shifts. It’s not repentance; it’s reputation management. It’s the bureaucratic equivalent of mailing in a confession to a priest and expecting forgiveness to be granted by default.
The voters, however, aren’t priests; they’re juries. Increasingly, they’re issuing guilty verdicts against politicians who believe they can rewrite the narrative on the fly.

Great observation - even the public that doesn't engage heavily in politics has observed the lack of sincerity by those trying to pivot into something they are not - its a classic ‘the emperor has no clothes” - as always John says it like it is - thank you Mr. Heubusch 👍👏
Love your article that clearly states the facts of the democrats “games of deceit and destruction” to America and We The People! Anyone who could vote for California’s governor, clearly has not seen what he’s done to a once beautiful and prosperous state. Not to mention that he NEVER answers any questions directly and with forthright honesty, because he’s all about his narcissistic agenda!! What the Biden team did to deceive our nation is criminal…everyone involved are criminals!!!!
